I don't think so... They skipped iPhone 2 and iPhone 3 and went right to "iPhone 4" because it was the 4th generation. Why wouldn't they call it iPhone 6 if it's the 6th generation?

As a software developer, the explanation that Apple gave seems far more plausible than "they are tracking your every move".
It makes total sense to keep a cache of cell tower positions to speed up positioning through trilateration (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilateration). It also makes sense for Apple to maintain this as a crowd-sourced database and download part of it to your phone. Further, it makes sense for a developer to make an arbitrary decision to say "let's make the cache size 2MB -- that's smaller than a single song". Finally, it makes sense for QA to miss this since the file is not readily visible through the user interface. I for one cannot remember a single iAd ever popping that was more appropriate based on my location (e.g.: a restaurant ad showing up when I was near a location for that restaurant chain). I seriously doubt that Apple cares where I have been for the past year -- especially with the huge degree of error that trilateration offers. But they definitely care about the crowd-sourced data to understand what regions iPhones are being used most heavily.
Certainly, if Apple wanted to record my personal position it would make MUCH MUCH MUCH more sense for their servers to simply record the query my phone makes to obtain the portion of the crowd-sourced database that my phone wants to cache. That query could easily include a more exact GPS position (i.e.: give me the part of the cache near this location). It could also include a phone identifier. Of course, a timestamp could be associated with the query. They could keep the information on their own servers where I would NEVER EVER see it and they could easily access it. Keeping it on my phone simply does not make sense if Apple really wanted this information -- it makes it easy for me to find and it is of less use to Apple that way.
I wonder if Google records my Wifi/GPS location on Google Maps or what locations I searched when using Google Maps. Hopefully, my identity is anonymized before the query is sent to Google for what part of the Maps database to pull down and cache. I've never heard myself say "Yo, Yo, wut up dude?" either, and yet I still like Kanye West. And you can't assume peoples musical tastes just because of their job or race. Computer people and reporters could have enjoyed the music as well. You can't say that they didn't with any certainty. I enjoy all sorts of music, and I'm sure many other people do as well.

My speculations from another thread:
I see Macworld shaping up to be all about portability, accessibility, & expanded functionality. So I expect to see:
Portability
- refresh of the mb pro laptops, possibly even a refresh of the macbooks
- iPod touch with 32gb
- the ultraportable announced and positioned in between the macbook and the mb pro
- multi-touch tablet with a 7 inch screen, 32gb ssd, wifi and bt, isight camera
- I believe Apple will wait till later in the year to announce the availability of a 3G iPhone which will come with 16gb
Accessibility
- iTunes movie rentals and expanded selection for purchase
- Ability to download movies, tv shows, podcasts, etc over wifi (iPhone, iPod touch, & tablet)
Expanded functionality
- iPhone/iPod touch update with all features that were leaked and few surprises like (ichat, copy & paste, finder w/coverflow, doc/e-book reader)
- Full preview of the SDK for the iPhone, iPod touch & new tablet

Jobs is a *big* MCM fan, leaning more towards European designers such as Saarinen, Hansen and Bertoia more so than American designers such as Nelson, the Eameses and McCobb. One thing I noticed when the iPad debuted is the iPad was on one of Saarinen's Tulip tables, and he himself sat in Le Corbusier's LC2 lounge chair. Apple products being inspired by old Dieter Rams designs and being made of fewer and fewer parts and having simple visual form is no coincidence.
That's why he hated Jackling's mansion with such a burning passion. It was very much Spanish Revival, which tends to be very decorative.

-A 3.7" iPhone would not have an identical appearance to the iPhone 4 by virtue of the screen size alone, so there would be no reason to simply add an S.
-3G is a feature description, adding an S might make some sense there as it could also be considered a "feature description". 4 is a revision number, why would they add an S to that? 4.5 or 5 would make more sense.
-The iPhone 4 and iOS 4 were launched in the same time frame, it makes sense for the numbers on each to match up. What's next? iPhone 5 and iOS 5 of course. I don't know why they'd stray from matching revision numbers so quickly after finally achieving them.
-If they plan on calling the phone after this 6, why would they skip 5, which sounds like a bigger upgrade than 4S?

This will be the first time ever, regular people will stop waiting for their computer to work, even when using multiple applications.
Umm - sorry to destroy your illusion here, but Amiga made that possible already in 1985! This was thanks to true preemptive multitasking (while Classic MacOS sported cooperative multitasking only, up to OS9). No matter how big the workload and with several applications open at the same time an Amiga would react instantly to any user action!
Even today a 50MHz Amiga with 128Mb of Ram often feels a lot more responsive than a 2.000+MHz beast with 1GB of Ram in a "modern" computer. Granted - todays GUIs are more complex as well, but still...
So with the new era of multi-core machines the "rest of the (home)computerworld" will finally have come on par with what Amiga could offer more than 20 years ago already!

This was thanks to true preemptive multitasking (while Classic MacOS sported cooperative multitasking only, up to OS9). No matter how big the workload and with several applications open at the same time an Amiga would react instantly to any user action!

I used that "shaky public beta" and it was so bizarre at first. By Christmas I was hooked and ditched 9 from all my Macs as the prime-start up OS. iTunes was instantly brilliant to me, and I spent 4 days straight ripping all 600 cds in my library.
